Found in context: { ... that public denunciation of Iranian meddling in iraq - arming and training militants - would lead to cross border raids on Iranian training camps and bomb factories. A prime target would be the Fajr base run by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force in southern Iran, where Western intelligence agencies say Armour-piercing projectiles used against British and US troops are manufactured. Under the theory - which is gaining credence in Washington security circles - US action would provoke a major Iranian response, perhaps in the form of moves to cut off Gulf oil supplies, providing a trigger for air strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities and even its armed forces.”Over the last several months, public pressure is growing in the United States for meaningful troop withdrawals from iraq. The American public is also growing increasingly restless about the lack of progress by the government of Nouri al- Maliki. In a September, 2007 Gallup public opinion poll, a record 60% say the United States should set a timetable to withdraw forces and stick to that timetable regardless of what is going on in the country.The remaining time for this Administration to govern is beginning to grow short. The start of the 2008 Presidential elections herald the conclusion of George Bush’s term in office. The prospect of a historic strategic military mistake by invading iraq. A humanitarian crisis in the country when our troops withdraw. A Middle East dominated by an Iran with nuclear weapons. The price of a barrel of oil throughout the world being held hostage by a radical regime... }

Further, consider the comments from Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards in May 2007 : "The War on Terror is a slogan designed only for politics, not a strategy to make America safe. It's a bumper sticker, not a plan."Leading American politicians referring to the War On Terror as a “phony war,” and a “slogan”, new Osama bin Laden videotapes, Osama bin Laden, alive and still not brought to justice, little progress in the governing of iraq, a regrouping of the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization; this is the current dubious state of the War On Terror six years after 9/11/2001. ... }

Found in context: { ... "measurable, but uneven" improvement in iraq's security situation since the beginning of the year. However, it also says insurgent and sectarian violence continues at a high level. iraqi forces cannot cope with the violence, the report says, without continuing assistance from U.S. troops. The intelligence report says iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government has been unable to achieve political reconciliation between rival sectarian factions. This, it says, indicates "precarious" stability for Mr. Maliki's team over the next six to twelve months.It appears the U.S. military surge led by General Petraeus has reduced violence and produced at least temporary stability in iraq. This troop surge and improved security should have bought time for the politicians in iraq to try to attain the basic benchmarks that would indicate political progress in the region. Unfortunately, the Parliament of iraq is in no real hurry, since they adjourned on July 30 and will not reconvene until September 4th.The report on the status of iraq by General Petraeus is due in mid- September and the political positioning in Washington D.C. has already begun. In September, the continued funding for the war and the deployment of U.S. troops in iraq will be up for debate by the United States Congress. Campaigns of both political parties are following events closely and will be refining candidate positions as events unfold. Indeed, the future direction of U.S. involvement in iraq will soon be the topic of discussion, but for now Washington awaits the report from General... }

Found in context: { ... Office on the status of 18 military and political goals set by Congress for iraq. The report found that the iraqi government has not yet met its requirement concerning 13 of the 18 goals including: *Providing three trained and ready iraqi brigades to support Baghdad operations. *Ensuring that the Baghdad security plan will not provide a safe haven for outlaws, regardless of sectarian or political affiliation.In iraq, since April 2003, we have seen insurgency, civil war, troops reduced, troop surges, and the iraqi government’s failure to meet benchmarks. We have seen these setbacks because the Bush Administration had a plan to win the war, but never developed a plan to win the peace. There was no contingency planning to govern iraq after Baghdad fell and there never was an iraq exit strategy. http://www.eworldvu.com Posted on Monday, September 10, 2007 at 08:10PM by James Smith | Post a Comment Reader Comments There are no comments for this journal entry. Found in context: { ... The reason that we are debating this question today is the total failure of the Bush Administration to properly communicate and establish the necessary framework for success in iraq . President George Bush stood under a “Mission Accomplished” banner on May 1, 2003 on the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln and declared “an end to all combat operations in iraq “. The entire administration’s communication strategy since that day would suggest an open ended commitment to staying in iraq without establishing any real measurement process of determining success there. This lack of focus and communication was a major reason that the iraqi lawmakers were recently pushing for their own two month summer vacation. Finally, on January 10, 2007 , under growing pressure from Congress and the American public, President George Bush in a change of strategy provided eighteen benchmarks to measure progress in iraq . ... }

Found in context: { ... This optimism for progress in Afghanistan does not extend to iraq. Prime Minister Nouri al- Maliki’s government is corrupt and ineffective. The U.S . troop level commitment will never be reduced with the current government in place. The Prime Minister of iraq needs to be replaced and a leader needs to emerge that can reconcile all factions in the country. The sooner this happens, the sooner the United States can eventually withdraw its troops. The unfortunate news for both iraq and the United States is that Nouri al- Maliki is no Hamid Karzai.... }
